This cannot possibly go well…
” ‘Meet the Press’ has an exclusive with National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre, joining David Gregory live for his first interview since the Newtown killings.”
“Dancin’ Dave” (thank you, Charles Pierce) is the worse possible interviewer on any topic even remotely controversial this side of Fox News. Okay, maybe Chuck Todd could top him in the masterful art of no follow-up questions.
Could be worse. Could be Chris Matthews.
I think you miss the point, Paul. Chris Matthews is his own joke and seen as such, but the likes of Gregory and Todd are seen as “respectable” journalists, the chin-stroking gods of wisdom whose imprimatur, even if only implicitly given by means of no challenging questions, makes it okay for the Establishment to continue doing nothing. They might as well allow heritage hire Luke Russert do the interview, in fact, probably should. After all, it was his father, the sainted Tim, the mention of whom brings a tear to Matthews’ eye, who turned Meet the Press into the program which Dick Cheney said was the Bush Administration’s go-to venue when they wanted to get their story out without any serious challenge.
I see what you mean. I still think Matthews would be worse. Just in a different way. He’d be a living straw man for the Left.
In any case, one could wish for a much more serious response, especially on something this important. (But how many people actually expect a serious response from our news media and Sunday talk shows these days?)
How many people even pay any attention to the Sunday talk shows outside the Washington crowd?
Good question. Probably not too many. Which is just as well.
Unfortunately, the Washington crowd doesn’t seem to pay much attention to what’s going on outside the beltway, either.
Well, I am sure it will go well, actually. At least for Waye LaPierre it will. I don’t see how he can fail to win his argument, whatever it will be with ol’ Dave.
I think it only fair to note that, from what I’ve seen and read, Gregory went at him pretty hard.
